Before You Order

Measuring Guide

Accurate measurements ensure you order the right kit size. Follow these steps — it takes less than 15 minutes.

What You'll Need

A tape measure (25 ft+), a notepad, a pencil, and optionally a helper for longer runs. A smartphone to take reference photos is helpful too.

Step 1: Sketch Your Layout

Draw a simple overhead sketch of the area you want to fence. It doesn't need to be to scale — just capture:

  • The shape of the area (rectangle, L-shape, irregular)
  • Where the fence starts and ends
  • Where you want the gate (if applicable)
  • Any obstacles (posts, downspouts, steps, planters)

Step 2: Measure Each Run

A "run" is a straight section of fence from one corner or endpoint to the next.

  1. Starting at one end of the fence line, measure the length of each straight run in feet and inches.
  2. Write each measurement on your sketch.
  3. For curved areas, measure the straight-line distance (chord) — our team can help you plan curved sections.
  4. Measure twice to confirm accuracy.

Step 3: Calculate Total Linear Footage

Add up all your runs to get the total linear feet. This is the number you'll enter into our Kit Size Calculator.

Example:

  • Run 1 (back of pool): 16 ft
  • Run 2 (left side): 8 ft
  • Run 3 (right side): 8 ft
  • Total: 32 linear feet → Pro Kit

Step 4: Note the Gate Position

Mark where you want your gate on the sketch. Standard gate widths:

  • Single gate: 36 inches (most common for pool access)
  • Double gate: 60 inches (for equipment or furniture access)

Gates are sold separately and the gate opening is not included in your linear footage measurement.

Step 5: Check Your Surface

Note the surface type where the fence will be mounted:

SurfaceCompatible?Notes
Poured concreteYesIdeal surface — most common
Concrete paversYesMust be set in mortar, not sand-laid
Composite deckingYesThrough-bolt to joists recommended
Wood deckingYesMust mount over or near joists
Natural stoneYesUse masonry anchors — contact us for specifics
Sand-laid paversNoPavers must be mortared or a concrete strip poured
Soil / grassNoRequires a concrete footing or strip to be poured first

Step 6: Send Us Your Measurements

Not sure which kit to order? Send us your sketch and measurements and we'll recommend the perfect kit for your project — free of charge.

    Pro Tip

When in doubt, round up. It's better to have a slightly larger kit than to be one panel short. Extra panels can be returned unopened within 30 days.
